Run the full command line on your host
Once you are logged in, you are on that OS — not a toy shell on the phone.
List files, edit configs, run scripts, start and stop services, check logs,
use git, build tools, Docker, package managers — whatever already lives on that box,
whether it is a full desktop or a Pi in a drawer.
Fix and operate without sitting at the desk
Restart a service that fell over. Pull the latest code. Check disk space. Kill a stuck process.
Tail a log while you are on the couch or in a hotel. Same admin work you would do from a laptop —
now from the Android in your pocket.
Move files between phone and host
Push a note, log, or capture up to the host; pull a config or build artifact down.

Plain English: leave your hosts on at home (or in the lab) —
desk PC, Raspberry Pi, server, NAS — put phone and those hosts on a free personal mesh
(we recommend Tailscale), then open Rune from a coffee shop, hotel, or cellular and
connect with Rune — full command line on your machine.
Advanced: phone = cockpit · your gear = muscle · no root · no Ubuntu on the phone.
Armor still works if you never touch this path.
One quick step before the guide
The walkthrough is straightforward. Our Terms of Use live on a separate page
(they cover the app, purchases, and optional remote setup). Please read and agree once —
then we’ll unlock the setup steps on this device.
We recommend Tailscale (free for personal use) so you don’t need to open SSH on your home router.
Other mesh setups work the same idea if you already run them.
Scope is simple: any machine you control that accepts SSH — not only a Windows desktop.
Host — install Tailscale
On each machine you want to reach (PC, Mac, Linux, Raspberry Pi, etc.):
install from tailscale.com (or the Pi / Linux package), sign in, leave it connected.
Note the machine name (e.g. lab-pc, pi-home).
Phone — install Tailscale
Same account (same tailnet). Toggle it on when you leave home Wi‑Fi.
Host — turn on SSH
Windows: Optional features → OpenSSH Server → start the service (Automatic).
Mac: Sharing → Remote Login.
Linux / Raspberry Pi OS: install or enable sshd (often already on for headless Pis).
Keys (recommended)
In Rune, generate a key if needed (ssh-keygen -t ed25519), put the .pub line into the host’s
authorized_keys, then test on home Wi‑Fi first:

Prove “anywhere”
Switch the phone to cellular. Tailscale on. Host still on. Rune → same ssh command.
Remote shell on that machine = pass.
